The Most Important Stat to Track
The most effective action you can take in your business to sell more art is to meet more people.
And here’s why.
Connection.
My favorite definition of connection is from Brene Brown's book “The Gift of Imperfection”. It stopped me in my tracks when I read it, and really helped me wrap my mind around what connection really is.
“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.”
― Brené Brown
My take on it...
Connection is the magic that happens when people feel like you get them and you feel like they get you.
Connection is WHY people buy YOUR art.
They feel connected to you and it.
Because they feel seen, understood, and valued.
And when someone feels seen, understood, and valued…
They lean in.
They drop their guard.
They share things with you.
They think thoughts like, “They get me.” “I resonate with them.” “I’m so glad I found them.”
They want to create more of that feeling.
And they do that by… subscribing to your emails, following you on social media, coming to your shows, and buying your art.
In the beginning of your art business….you have pre built connections with family and friends….and they come out and support you and cheer you on.
But, in order to grow and sell more art, you have to create more and more connections with people.
One of the problems I see today with artists in business is they solve for meeting new people by posting and sharing on social media.
But reaching people is not the same as connecting with people.
Connection exists between people.
Which requires more than pushing out posts and landing in front of them in their feed.
You have to actually talk to people….so they can learn about you, and you can learn about them, and you can FEEL that energy in your body of getting to know someone and connecting with them.
It doesn’t have to be in person…but I find it easiest to connect with new people when it can be in person, in conversation, in front of my art….especially with people who don’t know me yet.
This can also happen online in your comments, dm’s, emails, video calls, etc.
But if you find yourself feeling frustrated from all the effort you are putting into content creation without results…it’s probably because you are focusing more on reach than on connection.
Instead of tracking opens, engagement, traffic, followers, etc…
Track meaningful and heartfelt conversations.
See how many people you can meet today…really meet...and get to know.
This is the stat that matters most when it comes to moving the needle in your art business.
